Lovely, but often-underrated, Mikumi-part of the vast Selous ecosystem – is Tanzania’s fourth- largest national park. Its also the most accessible from Dar es Salaam and, with almost guranteed sightings of wildlife, makes an ideal destination for a safari for those who don’t have much time.
Within its 3230 sq km, set between the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast , Rubeho Mountains to the southeast, Mikumi hosts buffaloes, wildebeests, giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, leopards, crocodiles and more and chances are high that you’ll see a respectable sampling of these within a short time of entering the park.
Mikumi is an important educational and research centre. Among the various projects beingcarried out is an ongoing field study of yellow baboons, which is one of the just a handful of such long-term primate studies on the continent.
Vuma Hills Tented Camp The sixteen tents are comfortably furnished, so sleeping under canvas at Vuma is a far cry from the discomfort usually associated with camps. Complete with shaded wooden veranda at the front and en suite bathroom facilities at the back there is not much more to be asked for.

The cosy bar area centres round a roaring log fire, opening onto a large decking area from where you can take in the setting sun over the Mkata plains below. Under the same thatch, the dining area enjoys widespread views through the lush trees, and overlooking the swimming pool.
There is ramped access to the main areas, swimming pool and tent at Vuma, although help will be needed for wheelchair users as it is on a hillside. Staff are always on hand to offer assistance. There are no specific adaptations inside the tents but a shower chair can be provided.

Mikumi Wildlife Camp one of the main features of our public area is a massive Marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea), estimated over 200 years old. Its ancient, wide canopy provides a romantic ceiling for our evening dinners under the open night skies. A cosy fireplace provides the perfect spot to go over the day’s events.
Our bar is intimate and bathed in that golden light during sunset hours: a real good spot to observe the setting sun with something cold at hand.
The six bandas, are recently renovated, as well as the lounge, the outside dining-area, the swimming pool and the bar. They all overlook the well-attended waterholes in front of the camp. These waterholes tend to get rather busy during the dry season, with zebra’s, elephants, buffalo and impala being regular visitors.
They say that a good property needs three things: Location, Location, Location……well, we have all three!! Being right IN the park gives us a unique and beautiful view over the extensive savannah. The spectacular vista of “The Savannah of Light” can be soaked up from your room, private veranda, the bar, lounge, restaurant and even from our swimming pool….. But be warned…. elephants have been seen drinking from it!
Since we have been here for so long and have never posed a threat to the wildlife we have become part of it……Lions, leopard, buffalo and elephant can be seen or heard between the bandas at night. The plains are dotted with Sausage Trees, Tamarind Trees, Paperbark Acasias and hosts herds of elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and impalas.
The open-air restaurant looks out over these plains and give you the most wonderful panoramic views. And the bar is a wonderful place to sit and watch the sunset.
